Music: Winners and Losers

What makes an Award-winning singer and why? Not song, but singers?
When it comes to singers, who comes to mind as mounting on top? Michael Jackson? Elvis Presley? Barbra Streisand? Madonna? Members of Duran Duran? Bee Gees? John Denver? Dusty Springfield? Linda Ronstandt? Olivia-Newton-John? How about the 90s? Mariah Carey? Sheryl Crow? Nickelback?
To me, when I think of stunning and beautiful, I do think like...maybe Julie Andrews? Streisand? Springfield?
So I see comments on youtube about how music is deteriorating. So I got to ask, especially those who are bitter, what magic is needed to make a good singer?
